I've made a birthday cake for a friend to celebrate her special birthday. She's someone who is a talented knitter and I wanted the decoration on the cake to reflect that. I turned to the internet for inspiration and found a post on YouTube and a tutorial on the KatySue site which I smooshed together to come up with my design. I made balls of wool using the KatySue rope mould I made three different colours, I made knitting needles from bambo kebab sticks with a piece of sugarpaste for the end, which I then painted silver. The basket was cut using a LissieLou embosser and cutter. I added knitted knots/balls and hearts
along with some butterflies and leaves
I made my usual Vanilla tray bake cake as the base using the Mary Berry recipe, I covered that with a think layer of Raspberry conserve, topped with a sheet of pre-rolled fondant icing. I then added my decorations, I had also used an icing mould from Karen Davies to cut the Birthday greeting from to give a texture to the letters. I piped buttercream rosettes around the top of the bottom of the cake and decorated them with icing knitted balls. I enjoyed making all the decorations and it is fair to say that the cake was a success.
